Racing Rules for Friday Afternoon Racing Series

Printable version - Click Here

    Race Course

    • All courses will be in or near Eagle harbor.
    • The starting line will be set 20 minutes before the race (direction will be to windward). See the Course map above.
    • Start line will be between the Flag on the BIYC Float , and a yellow mark perpendicular to the wind.
    • Start by heading North East to the green #5 buoy leave it to Starboard. Head West and round the Green #3 dolphin near the harbor entrance leaving it to starboard. Head west and round the 5 MPH – “Slow no Wake” buoy leaving it to port. Head South East to the finish line.
    • The Course will be either once around or twice around depending on the wind.. If twice around, you must round the starting mark and cross start finish line heading up wind on the second lap.
    • Please stay near to the starting line just prior to the race, so the race committee can inform you of changes to course and start times, using the bull horn.
    • Please note that the Green # 5 buoy is not a mark on the return to the BIYC buoy.
    • Course shares same route as the Ferry - remember all boats must give way to ferry traffic.
    • Skippers are advised to check the tides prior to the race to determine whether to cross the shallows south of the harbor entrance.

    Racing Rules

    • All US Sailing Rules apply.
    • This is an informal race and it's expected that boats will avoid collisions at all cost since there is no formal Protest committee
    • You may cleanse any right of way rules violations, by performing a 720 before finishing (or facing a firing squad of water balloons when you return to the club house.)
    • If a ferry is required to warn a sailboat of possible collision (more than one horn blast) will result in DSQ.
    • Standard navigation rules are in force. Boats anchored in the harbor are considered "obstacles" that you must avoid
    • If there is no race committee at a racing event, a representative of the BIYC (participant) will act in the best interest of the racers attending.

    Start Times

    • All starting times will be based on PHRF Ratings. For day sailing boats the PHRF ratings are listed in a table below.
    • All other sailing craft should use the PHRF ratings associated with your vessel.
    • The Race Committee (when present) will maintain "official time." All attempts will be made to mirror "atomic time" however the Race Comittees time is official - not participants watches. It is the responsibility of the participant to keep track of "Official Time."
    • Participants must start on their assigned times guided by the PHRF equivalent table below.

Send us information on your boat to info@the-biyc.us (LOA, Name, Skipper, email, type, and sail number) and we will add it to the list below. If you know your PHRF Rating let us know.

Everyone that participates in the race is invited to the BIYC Club house for an after race – no host – BBQ and bragging session. Please be careful where you tie your boat at Eagle Harbor Marina. Do not take open slips with out direction as all slips are occupied by residents of the marina (they may just be out for a cruise). Contact the Eagle Harbor Marina Office at 206-842-4003 if you would like to arrange for a slip.
